To maximize the stimulating effect of coffee, it is best to drink it at a specific time of day, according to a neuroscientist.
Coffee breaks are an everyday occurrence in the professional world. It takes place at any time of day – but that’s actually not ideal. One expert has even revealed a mistake we all make when it comes to drinking coffee. On the other hand, other experts see coffee as a miracle cure and strongly recommend regular consumption.
The truth is that there is actually a certain time of day when the effects of a coffee break are undisputed. You can find out when this is in this article.
A question of cortisol
For many employees, drinking coffee is a habit, but there are differences in the time of day. For some, it is the first reflex after getting up, showering, and even before eating – although some experts advise against such early coffee consumption. For others, drinking coffee is only possible with colleagues when they have just arrived at the office. But is there a certain time of day that multiplies the effects of coffee? At least, that’s what American neuroscientist Steven Miller thinks.
He is said to be convinced that coffee should only be drunk when cortisol levels in the body are at their lowest. This hormone, produced by the adrenal glands, promotes alertness by releasing sugar from our reserves. The scientist says the ideal time to drink coffee is at 10:30 am.
The quantity is crucial
The main risk of drinking too much coffee remains the loss of potency, as Dr. Miller writes in a 2013 article:
One of the key principles of pharmacology is to use a drug when necessary, although I’m sure some scientists might argue that caffeine is always necessary. Otherwise, we can develop a tolerance to a drug administered at the same dose.
As a result, we lose the much-needed energy to get through the day. Excessive consumption can also cause various disorders in the body. Insomnia, headaches, or even heartburn and anxiety are to be expected.
